Sahaya Vocational Centre
At the Vocational Centre Children above 10 years are taught various creative art activities. They manufacture phenyl, and detergent, and also make letter paper, gift covers, greeting cards, paper bags, spun bonded fabric bags and other products etc on order. Orders are also taken for screen printing.
Sukh Shanti - Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
The idea of “Sukh Shanti” CBR Programme germinated when, through the “Out Reach “ Programmes, many disabled people were approaching Cheshire Home for help from distant villages. The cases we had helped, highlighted the fact that with the introduction of CBR to the Centre, disabled needy people, could apply for Special Aids, necessary to ease their lives and also access all the Government schemes etc.
CBR
is a cost effective , comprehensive, strategy for rehabilitation,
providing equal opportunities and social integration of all
people with disabilities within the Community so that they become self reliant
and join the mainstream of society with dignity.
Awareness
Awareness
was created at different levels using audio visual aids. 28 Film shows for 1400
people on various aspects of disability. 45 School Based awareness programs were
conducted for 2400 children in Government Schools on how to extend support
towards children with disability of their age. 168 Teachers, and Heads of
Institutions have been sensitized on disability.

Training and Income Generation
2 Speech and Hearing impaired men, were identified and were sent for training in screen-printing and tailoring. They are given jobs at the day centre, based on the orders obtained for Spun bonded bags with screen printing on it.

with Locomotor Disability, are
being supported, one for an Advanced Diploma in Multi-media and Spoken English,
under the International Self Reliance programme and the other for a teachers
training course for which funds were raised through local contributions. 3 PWDS
are attending the training in Book Binding and Tailoring
This will provide them economic
sustenance to lead an independent livelihood and join the main stream with
dignity
9 Self Help
Groups have been formed with micro Savings. These groups
will act as pressure groups in future to enhance
the services, from different resources.
Advocacy
A
CBR society was initiated in Coorg district to introduce the concept of CBR. The
Committee was constituted with the Deputy Commissioner as Chair Person.
This forum will bridge the relationship between the Government and
Non-government organisations and act as a nodal agency to enhance the policies
and implement the programmes in the district.
Negotiations
are on to form a Legal Aid Cell for the disabled at Virajpet.
A
District Federation has been formed
so that these PWD’s act as
pressure groups to access all the facilities
Education
Children
with disabilities have been integrated for Inclusive Education. Out of the
identified 76 children with disabilities, 56 students
have been admitted into formal and special schools. Accessibility has been
created in some of the existing Government Schools.

Children with disabilities have applied for Scholarships. After a series of
discussions with the Assistant Project Officer of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the
BEO, to create a barrier free environment in Government Schools, 13 Schools have
been selected for
ramps ,for the current year and we have undertaken the responsibility of
getting them built .
A summer
camp in collaboration with Sarva Shiksha Abiyan,(SSA) was held from the
2nd -15th May for 30 disabled children and they
were taught creative art activities.
Sports
, were held for CWDS from Inclusive Education Schools in 7 clusters of Virajpet
Taluk, with, Awareness programmes
and Video shows in collaboration with SSA. A Ramp construction workshop was held
for 80 Heads of Institutions at GMP School, Virajpet
Community Organisations
As
People with disabilities were isolated, lacked opportunities and faced problems
accessing the services from the Government there was a need to encourage these
people with varied abilities to form small groups with in the community to
access the facilities. 66 PWD’s , and family members have been constituted
into self help groups.
These
groups will act as pressure groups in the community and influence the policy
makers in implementing the schemes. It also creates a plat form for PWD’s to
address their needs through various networks, with the Government and
Non-Government agencies. These Self
Help Groups have been formed into a Taluk level federation.
Exposure
visits were made to the Government Departments and to the CBR project at
Ramanagaram by the SHG’s and
Federation Members to understand
the concept of the Federation .
Health

Camps were organized for Visually impaired, Mental retardation, Speech &
Hearing and Locomotor disability
and 536 were assessed. 351 have
been referred to various hospitals. 61 have received medication, 64 Assistive
devices, 91 therapy, from the
target area. 314 were assessed for
vision deformities and 145 were operated for cataract.
Camps were conducted by the Occupational Therapists from
University of Sydney and 96 PWD’s were
assessed.
A
Multiple Disability Initiatives Resource Kit was field tested to assess whether the care givers
were able to comprehend the developmental milestones
with the support of the CBR Team.
Workshops
,Training programmes are conducted on a regular basis for the Cheshire Home
Team, Self Help Groups and for various Departments.
Social Securities
194 Persons with Disability have received Identity cards, 95 Physically Handicapped Pension’s, 105 Income certificates, and 5 have received bus passes
